The eThekwini Municipality has announced the accelerated repair process for the Mobeni Heights and oThongathi (Tongaat) crematoria, ensuring both facilities return to full operation as swiftly as possible.

This commitment came from eThekwini mayor Cyril Xaba, who conducted an oversight visit to the Mobeni Heights Crematorium on Tuesday June 10 to evaluate ongoing restoration efforts and the extensive damage to the site.

The Mobeni facility has been temporarily closed for three weeks following reports that its furnaces began overheating. This malfunction resulted in dangerous emissions, creating environmental and health risks for residents in the area. Addressing these concerns, Mr Xaba confirmed that the procurement process for two new furnaces has already started, with a target for installation and operation by the end of August.

“We understand the inconvenience caused to families and communities, and that is why we are accelerating the repair process. R14 million has been allocated not just for the replacement of the furnaces, but to upgrade the entire facility,” he said, adding that the municipality is committed to providing safe and efficient cremation services.

Residents have been advised to be patient during this critical repair period. Mr Xaba reassured them that the municipality would closely monitor the repair progress to avoid any further delays.

Repairs at the oThongathi Crematorium are also under way, with R7 million earmarked for furnace replacement, and completion expected by the end of next month.

Meanwhile, residents looking for cremation services are encouraged to utilise nearby crematoria.

The mayor’s visit to Mobeni Heights also included an inspection of projects at the Port of Durban, where large-scale infrastructure upgrades are underway. These projects are focused on deepening berths to accommodate larger vessels, enhancing road access, and developing a multi-purpose terminal.

“These developments are essential for stimulating economic growth not just in Durban, but across South Africa and the continent,” said Mr Xaba, connecting the dots between infrastructure improvement and regional prosperity.
