Moira Harding: Missing Comrades runner found alive in critical condition

A Comrades Marathon runner who went missing shortly after finishing Sunday’s race has been found alive but in a critical condition.

Moira Harding, whose disappearance sparked a widespread search effort, was located on Mahatma Gandhi (formerly Point) Road in Durban on Monday morning.

The Comrades Marathon Association confirmed in a statement that Harding had been found “safe and alive” after more than 24 hours of intensive searching.

Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene, where paramedics stabilised Harding before she was prepared for airlift to hospital.

Advanced Life Support Paramedics treated Moira Harding on scene before she was transported to a nearby hospital.

Garrith Jamieson, director of ALS Paramedics, said Harding was discovered in a serious state of health."

A wide-scale search was launched and paramedics, together with SAPS, Metro Police Search and Rescue, and Netcare 911, managed to locate the runner in a critical condition near the NSRI base in the Point waterfront precinct,” he said.

“Advanced Life Support Paramedics treated the patient on scene before she was transported to a nearby hospital for the urgent care she required,” said Jamieson. A Netcare 911 medical helicopter was dispatched to airlift Harding.

As a result, Mahatma Gandhi Road was temporarily closed to allow the helicopter to land safely. Harding’s condition remains critical, and more details will be released once she has received medical attention.
