The much-anticipated 18th Annual Sunflower Sky Hike will take place on Sunday June 15, offering an unforgettable journey through the majestic Sani Pass — and this year’s event carries extra significance as it falls on Father’s Day and the Youth Day long weekend.
Starting at the Sani Pass border post and climbing towards Lesotho, the 16km round-trip hike (8km up, 8km down) promises more than just breathtaking views. It’s a heartfelt tribute to courage, community, and care. The hike kicks off at 7.30am and wraps up around 2pm.
This beloved annual event is a charity hike with a cause. Funds raised will support Michelle Reddy, this year’s designated hiking recipient who is bravely battling breast cancer, and Rainbow and Smiles, a non-profit raising awareness for childhood cancer.
Hikers can expect frozen waterfalls, rare Rockjumper bird sightings, and the chance to walk in solidarity with others — whether remembering loved ones, supporting fighters, or celebrating survivors. True to its theme, “Lives touching Lives,” every step is a symbol of strength and connection.
Organisers are calling on participants to “light up the pass with sunflowers” — creating a vibrant trail of hope and joy. The entry fee is R150, and a valid passport is needed to cross into Lesotho.
A refreshment station will be set up at the Sani Pass border post, with cash-only breakfast and lunch burgers, as well as hot drinks available for hikers needing a warm boost.
And for those who want to keep the celebration going? The Highest Pub in Africa beckons just across the border. Bring R100 for the tourist levy and enjoy a R200 pub voucher as a reward for your efforts.
Support and safety on the trail will be expertly handled by the Land Rover 4x4 Club, ensuring that all participants enjoy a secure and memorable mountain adventure.
So whether you hike for healing, for someone special, or simply because you can — lace up those boots and be part of a movement where every step matters.
