Five suspects wanted in connection with the murders of a man and his wife were shot and fatally wounded during a shootout with police in the Mophela area near Hammarsdale on Sunday evening.
Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda had received intelligence on the whereabouts of the suspects, who were travelling along the Mophela main road.
“When officers intercepted the vehicle and attempted to stop it, the suspects allegedly opened fire. Police returned fire, resulting in all five suspects being killed at the scene. Police acted on intelligence and attempted to intercept the vehicle, but the suspects chose to engage law enforcement with gunfire," said Colonel Netshiunda.
"Our members responded accordingly, and during the exchange, five suspects were fatally wounded,” he said.
Colonel Netshiunda said a preliminary search of the scene revealed three firearms in the possession of the suspects.
“The suspects were being sought in connection with the murder of a 66-year-old man who was shot and killed at his home in the Ekwandeni area last Saturday. The same man had previously survived a shooting incident in January, while his wife was murdered at their home in February,” said Colonel Netshiunda.
Police have also linked the suspects to the killing of two police officers.
Colonel Netshiunda said investigations were ongoing and more charges may be added.
“We believe these suspects could be linked to other serious and violent crimes,” he said.
Police are continuing their investigation and have urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
