Glenwood High School held a poignant ceremony in its hall to honour the memory of 15-year-old Kayden Moodley, a Grade 10 pupil who tragically passed away during a hockey warm-up session last month.
In a deeply moving moment, Kayden’s parents rang the school bell — an honour typically reserved for boys at their induction into the Glenwood brotherhood and again at the end of Matric, symbolising the journey from boyhood to Old Boy. This act signified Kayden’s enduring place among the Glenwood brotherhood.
The Glenwood Old Boys’ Association paid tribute to Kayden by presenting his parents with a framed matric tie and an Old Boys’ tie. Following the ceremony, a plaque was unveiled on the Wall of Remembrance, ensuring Kayden's spirit will forever live on at Glenwood.
Kayden collapsed on the school's sports field while training for a hockey match. According to reports, he complained about being out of breath and requested to be substituted. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
His sister, Tammy Moodley, stated that Kayden had no underlying health conditions and had fully recovered from a recent bout of flu. The family is still awaiting the post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death.
Kayden was remembered for his vibrant personality, unwavering dedication, and infectious enthusiasm. He had dreams of studying abroad and becoming a successful businessman in Dubai.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has offered condolences and is working closely with Glenwood High School to provide psychological and emotional support to pupils, teachers, and the bereaved family.
