Durban motorists have been urged to remain on high alert, as heavy rainfall overnight and during the early parts of the morning, has already led to flooding in several parts of the city.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 warning for disruptive rain across parts of KwaZulu-Natal, cautioning of possible localised flooding in both settlements and on roads.

Emergency services have confirmed that flooding has occurred in key areas, including between Mimosa and Nandi Roads, the N2 and M19 Umgeni Road intersection, North Coast Road, and Queen Nandi Drive.

Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, has called on drivers to be extra cautious. “Please ensure your vehicle is roadworthy, drive with your headlights on for visibility, and leave earlier to accommodate any delays caused by the weather,” he advised.

He also urged residents living in low-lying areas to be especially vigilant. “If water begins entering your house, evacuate immediately — don’t wait until it’s too late,” Mr Jamieson warned. He added that the ground in many areas is saturated, and there is a risk of sandbanks collapsing.

Motorists are advised to avoid waterlogged roads, reduce their speed, and keep a close eye on traffic advisories and official weather alerts. With continued rain expected, authorities are monitoring the situation closely and urging the public to prioritise safety at all times.
