The oThongathi Crematorium furnace will be replaced at a cost of R8 million, following the eThekwini Municipality’s approval of an additional R3 million to fast-track the project.
The decision comes after the crematorium’s furnace suffered repeated breakdowns before completely failing on January 24. Technical assessments confirmed that the equipment had reached the end of its lifespan, making a full replacement necessary.
The initial R5 million was allocated in the City’s adjustment budget, and with the latest funding, work can now proceed.
eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba acknowledged the importance of restoring cremation services for the northern region.
“The failure of the furnace has left many families without access to this essential service. We are pleased that Exco has acted swiftly to ensure the urgent replacement of the furnace, showing our commitment to the needs of our residents,” said Mr Xaba.
To cover the R3 million shortfall, the Parks, Recreation, and Culture Unit has identified savings within its capital budget. The City will now appoint a South African-based service provider to manufacture, construct, and install the new furnace. The contractor will also provide maintenance support for 12 months under warranty, with a potential two-year extension.
Mr Xaba said the City was committed to providing dignified and efficient services.
“We understand the cultural and religious significance of cremation for many communities. This urgent reprioritisation of funds demonstrates our commitment to ensuring all residents have access to essential municipal services,” he said.
The Municipality has assured residents that updates will be provided as the project progresses, with full operations at the crematorium expected to be restored within the current financial year.
