A 76-YEAR-old Northern Cape grandmother’s trust was shattered when a visitor to her home turned into a predator. Now, her attacker, 46-year-old Daniel Williams, will spend the next two decades behind bars for his heinous crime.
The Philipstown Regional Court sentenced Williams on March 7 to 20 years in prison for raping the elderly woman at her home in Petrusville.
According to Northern Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Sergio Kock, the attack took place on December 3, 2023. Williams had been visiting the victim and her husband when the husband stepped out to go to the shop. Seizing the opportunity, Williams overpowered and raped the defenceless woman before fleeing the scene.
When her husband returned, he found his wife in distress and immediately reported the incident to the police. Williams was arrested just two days later, and bail was successfully opposed to keep him in custody.
The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant-General Koliswa Otola, praised Detective Sergeant Willy Isaacs from the De Aar Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for his dedicated investigation, which ensured Williams’ conviction.
Lieutenant-General Otola emphasised that the SAPS remains committed to bringing perpetrators of gender-based violence to justice and will continue to intensify its efforts to protect vulnerable members of society.
In addition to his 20-year prison sentence for rape, Williams’ name has also been added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
