Call for shellfish collectors to gather data

The Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) is calling on local shellfish collectors to help safeguard one of KwaZulu-Natal's essential coastal species: the brown mussel. In light of a concerning decline in brown mussel collection, ORI scientists are seeking assistance from the community to provide crucial data through a short survey.

“For 60 years, our ORI scientists have monitored how people in KZN use coastal resources, like east coast rock lobster, mussels, octopus, and sand prawns (crackers),” said an ORI representative. This long-term information has been instrumental in guiding fishery management and has also highlighted the significant impact that events such as COVID-19, the 2021 social unrest, and the devastating floods of April 2022 have had on brown mussel populations.

Once thriving at popular collection sites along the reefs of uMhlanga, eMdloti, and Ballito — historically responsible for almost half of all mussel trips in KZN — the brown mussel numbers have dropped sharply in recent years. Brown mussels are a keystone species, providing food and habitat for intertidal creatures like limpets, snails, sea cucumbers, and even juvenile fish, playing a fundamental role in the coastal ecosystem.

As the need for updated information becomes more urgent, ORI scientists are turning to voluntary catch reporting, online surveys, and fishery observers to gain insight into current shellfish collection habits. The ORI survey, which takes no longer than 10 minutes, is easy to complete and ensures all submitted information remains confidential.

“If you are a shellfish collector, we would be most appreciative if you would consider participating in this year’s survey,” the ORI representative added. “By contributing, you’ll be directly supporting marine conservation efforts—and you could stand a chance to win a prize," said the representative.
