The Crocworld Conservation Centre team in Scottburgh came to the rescue when they removed a 3.8-metre Southern African Python at Renishaw Farm on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.
The call for help came from farm workers who had noticed the large reptile.
Crocworld’s animal curator, Busani Mthiyane, responded immediately, leading his team to the site where they swiftly located the female python.
Upon assessment, the team discovered that the snake had sustained a small wound.
Acting promptly, they transported the python to Dr Jonathan Clark at the Scottburgh Veterinary Clinic. There, the snake was sedated, had her wound treated, and underwent a full health check. Fortunately, the python was given a clean bill of health.
Crocworld’s Conservation Centre manager, James Wittstock, said the team initially thought the python might be pregnant, which would have added an extra layer of significance to the rescue.
“Female Southern African Pythons are known for their rare maternal instincts, staying with their hatchlings for the first few weeks of their lives. She has recovered well and is now ready for release into a suitable environment this week,” Mr Wittstock said.
