In yet another shoot-out, five suspects who were wanted for a string of murders and business robbery cases were killed in a shootout with police in Cato Crest, Durban, on Tuesday night.

KZN police spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, said a multidisciplinary team, comprising members of various police units in KZN had been tracking and tracing the suspects when they got information about their whereabouts.

“A shootout ensued and after the ceasefire, five suspects were found to have sustained fatal gunshot wounds,” said Colonel Netshiunda. He said an AK47 assault rifle, three handguns and drugs were found in the possession of the suspects.

“The suspects had been positively linked with four counts of murder, 13 cases of business robbery and another case of carjacking which were committed in the Cato Manor and Durban Central policing precincts.”

Colonel Netshiunda said no police officer was injured during the shootout.

Last week, nine suspected criminals were killed in several shooting incidents with police.

On Friday last week, five suspects wanted for multiple crimes, including at least 10 cases of murder, were shot dead in two separate shootouts. In the early hours of Friday morning, three suspects were killed in a shootout with police in the KwaDlangezwa area of Empangeni, northern KZN. Later on the same day, two more suspects were shot dead in another confrontation with police in Inanda.

On Thursday, an ATM bombing suspect was arrested while another was shot dead in a shootout with police in Esikhaleni, near Richards Bay.

On Tuesday evening three suspects who were wanted for a string of murders, including the 2023 murder of a police sergeant, were shot dead in a shootout with police in the Congo area of Inanda, Durban.
