Metro police take zero-tolerance stance on drunk driving

eThekwini Municipality said they remain unrelenting in enforcing municipal by-laws, especially when it comes to those driving under the influence of alcohol.

In the recent weeks the city has hosted several high-profile events which brought a welcome boost to the tourism and accommodation sectors. The municipality said it is determined to do its best to draw in tourists and they have now focused their attention on cleaning up the city and keeping it safe.

eThekwini Municipality communication officer, Gugu Sisilana said several roadblocks were held recently to curb drunk driving and promote road safety. This she said resulted in the arrest of 59 drivers.

“The offenders ranged in age between 22 to 57. These arrests underscore the Metro Police’s zero-tolerance stance towards those found driving while under the influence,” said Ms Sisilana.

Metro Police spokesperson Colonel Boysie Zungu confirmed the arrests, which he said highlighted the Metro Police’s continued commitment to road safety.

“Driving while under the influence endangers not only the driver but others on the road and can have long lasting implications for those arrested,” he said.

“The multiple roadblocks were set up at strategic locations throughout Durban where the Metro Police conducted breathalyser tests on drivers.”
