A father and son were taken by surprise on Monday afternoon, while stuck in traffic, when a gunman approached their car and fired several shots at the father before fleeing in a getaway vehicle. The son was not harmed.

On Monday afternoon a man and his young son were travelling on old North Coast Road at the entrance of Broadlands, when the father was shot multiple times by an unknown suspect.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) spokesman, Prem Balram said RUSA’s Phoenix Operations Centre was inundated with calls from passing motorists reporting the shooting. He added that reaction officers were dispatched to the scene of the shooting at approximately 3.46pm on Monday February 12.

“On (our officers’) arrival at the scene, the father was being stabilised by paramedics from a private ambulance service,” said Mr Balram.

“The father was shot several times in the presence of his minor son. According to witnesses, the shooter exited a white vehicle (make, model and registration unknown) and approached the father, who was driving a gold BMW M4.

“The father and son were in stationary traffic when the shooting occurred. The suspect fired multiple shots before he fled in the getaway vehicle. The victim’s minor son was in the passenger seat. He was not injured but in a state of shock. The father was airlifted to hospital.”

The motive for the shooting is unknown, said Mr Balram.

Police are investigating the incident.
