In a heartfelt display of solidarity, 75 cyclists from Wheel to Heal are gearing up to “Ride for Palestine” this Sunday, aiming to raise funds for the victims of the ongoing conflict in the country.
Durban cyclists are set to play a pivotal role in this fundraising endeavour for Palestine, shedding light on the current crisis in Gaza. Weather permitting, the Durban event will kick off at 5am from Moses Mabhida Stadium. The cycling teams, Impi NPC and Lightspeed Cycling Club, are set to lead the participants in this meaningful ride.
The Wheel to Heal ride spans a distance of 75km, following in the footsteps of the Cape Town initiative. Dr Elias Parker, the founder of this non-profit organisation, in collaboration with the African Muslims Agency, has set a lofty goal of raising a total of R750 000 for Palestine, which has been deeply affected by the conflict that erupted on October 7.
Gaza has been receiving humanitarian aid to address the critical shortages of healthcare, clean running water, and food, among other essentials, that have afflicted its residents.
Dr Parker emphasised the urgency of the situation saying that help was needed urgently.
“Palestine needs help now more than ever, from you, me, and all of us. The on-going slaughter of men, women, and children is unacceptable. Assisting in every way is incumbent on us. Our cycling club, Wheel to Heal, given the 75-year terror inflicted on the Palestinians, has resolved to invite 75 cyclists to cycle 75 kilometers to raise a total of R750 000 and also highlight 75 years of oppression of the Palestinian people and the illegal occupation of Palestinian land,” said Dr Parker.
Highlighting the importance of every sponsorship, Dr Parker expressed the organisation's strategy of raising funds in increments. He urged groups, organisations, and individuals to contribute increments of R37 500, with the goal of achieving the total target.
“Twenty such groups, organisations, and individuals raising incremental figures of R37500 will total to R750 000. Please lend a hand to raise the projected amount or more. Every bit will help in relieving the pain and horror being inflicted on our people,” he said.
