Durban-based pianist, composer, and researcher Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane was recently awarded the prestigious HSS Award for Music Composition.
The award celebrates artistic merit and cultural depth showcased in his album Music from My People.
Presented by the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIHSS) Awards, the award, honours significant contributions in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) fields.
“This award is deeply meaningful,” says Mashiloane.
“It not only validates my work, but also serves as a powerful reminder to our people, particularly the younger generation, of the importance of tradition and cultural music – the very foundation of our musical identity,” says Mashiloane.

“Receiving this award is a profound honour. It reaffirms the value of our musical heritage and emphasises the importance of preserving our cultural identity for future generations,” Mashiloane said.

The NIHSS jury praised Music from My People for its exceptional production quality and the sophisticated composition reflective of Mashiloane’s rich musical experience.
