Local author Jerald Danasekera Vedan has unveiled his latest offering, a collection of short stories called Mayville Mosaic.
The book, which has been described as “artfully intertwining the fabric of fiction with the rich historical essence of Mayville, Durban”, was launched on Saturday February 17, at a gathering held at the Goodwill Manor in Reservoir Hills.
Born and raised in Mayville, Vedan’s intimate knowledge of the area’s streets, alleys, and the vibrant life they harbour breathes life into the pages of Mayville Mosaic.
“My book aims to not only pay homage to my roots but also aims to capture the spirit and nuances of a community closely linked with Cato Manor and Mayville,” said Vedan.
Through Vedan’s vivid storytelling, readers are transported to a world where every corner and crevice of Mayville holds a story waiting to be told.
“From the echoes of childhood merriment to the complexities of adult life, the book promises a journey through a spectrum of emotions and experiences. It’s a journey of the soul,”said Vedan.
The characters that populate Vedan’s stories are as diverse and colourful as Mayville itself. From Tony, the quintessential underdog, to Alf, whose geekiness belies a romantic heart, and Vavoothan, a hero in his own right – each character offers a glimpse into the myriad facets of human life. The collection is peppered with individuals like Bev, the undeniable beauty, and Dora, the fitness enthusiast, who adds depth and humour to the narrative landscape.
Vedan, whose career spans law, conveyancing, and labour matters, brings to his writing a deep engagement with themes of religion, philosophy, and the human condition. A follower of Buddhism and Stoicism, his works, including The Way to Health and various poems and newspaper articles, reflect a quest for understanding and conveying the essence of our existence.
With Mayville Mosaic Vedan aspires to connect with readers on a personal level, inviting them to explore their own memories and stories within the framework of his fictional yet deeply resonant world.
Mayville Mosaic is available for purchase from the Made in Durban website.
